Passenger Seriously Injured in Semi-Truck Accident on US-56 in Ford County, Kansas

Ford County, Kan. — One person was seriously hurt in a collision involving a semi-truck and a Toyota Tacoma on Saturday evening. The incident happened on US-56 northeast of Dodge City.

According to reports, the semi-truck was traveling eastbound when its trailer began to swerve on slick roads. The driver’s efforts to regain control caused the trailer to jackknife.

A Toyota Tacoma collided with the jackknifed trailer. A 27-year-old passenger in the Tacoma sustained serious injuries and was hospitalized.

No further information has been released.

Commercial Trucks Have a Responsibility to Operate Only Under Safe Conditions

The news release states that road conditions were slick. This raises concerns. Should the semi-trucks have been on the road in the first place? It is unacceptable to put another motorist’s life in danger for economic gain or convenience. The person injured deserves answers and compensation for the injuries and suffering caused by the crash.

Unfortunately, the trucking company may try to do everything it can to minimize blame or shift responsibility. The victim in this incident deserves better. At the end of the day, even if the trucker did not mean to lose control, driving in dangerous conditions is unacceptable.

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), commercial trucks should stop operating if conditions are too dangerous. Specifically, the FMCSA advises drivers to immediately discontinue operations if conditions prevent safe driving due to adverse weather conditions. Drivers are also instructed to reduce speed and prepare for longer stopping distances and slower turns. Did the truck drivers follow these safety guidelines? The truck driver’s actions must be closely examined due to the harm this incident has caused.

May they recover and heal, find the guidance and support they need, and receive the justice they deserve.
