Volvo Recalls Defective EV and Plug-In Hybrid Models Over Brake Failure Risk


WASHINGTON, D.C. — Volvo has issued a high-priority warning to owners of certain electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, urging them not to drive affected models due to a potentially critical brake failure risk.

According to Volvo and federal safety officials, the problem arises from prolonged use of regenerative braking systems—specifically, continuous activation for more than one minute and 40 seconds. Under certain conditions, this can cause the complete loss of braking function.

Models impacted by the warning include several recent and upcoming Volvo EVs such as the 2023 C40, 2025 EC40, and 2023–2024 XC40 Recharge. Plug-in hybrid models also affected include the 2025–2026 EX40, 2023–2025 S60, 2025 S90, 2022–2026 XC60, 2024–2025 V60, and 2020–2026 XC90.

At least one serious incident related to the defect has been reported.
