Colsen Recalls Defective Fire Pits Due to Serious Burn Hazard Linked to Flame Jetting and Fire Spread

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Colsen has issued a recall of its indoor/outdoor tabletop fire pits following multiple reports of serious burn injuries caused by flame jetting and fire spreading hazards.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall after receiving 31 incident reports involving the fire pits, including 19 cases of burn injuries, two of which resulted in third-degree burns covering more than 40% of the victims’ bodies.

The recalled fire pits feature an open concrete reservoir designed to hold and burn liquid alcohol. Alcohol flames can be nearly invisible, and pouring fuel into the unit when it is lit or hot can cause flame jetting: a dangerous occurrence where flames flash back into the alcohol container and shoot burning liquid onto nearby individuals.

In some incidents, the alcohol has splashed or leaked during use, leading to uncontrolled flash fires and larger flames escaping the unit.

The recall applies to seven Colsen-branded fire pit models, which vary in size from 5 to 18 inches in width and are available in gray or black. The units are offered in multiple shapes, including round, rectangular, hexagonal, square, and skull-shaped designs. Each fire pit comes with a flame extinguisher marked with the “Colsen” brand name.

Burns can occur in less than one second and may result in life-altering injuries. At least six of the reported incidents required surgery, admission to specialized burn treatment centers, and long-term medical care. Some victims experienced short-term disability, loss of function, physical therapy, and permanent disfigurement.
