Ethicon Recalls Defective Surgical Stapler Cartridges Due to Serious Injury and Death Risk


Johnson & Johnson’s Ethicon unit has recalled certain disposable surgical stapler cartridges after a reported malfunction was linked to one death and one injury.

The issue involves devices that may activate but fail to cut or staple tissue as intended. In such cases, additional steps are required to open and remove the stapler from tissue, which can delay surgery and increase the risk of serious complications.

According to the FDA, the risk arises if users are unable to remove a locked device or are unaware of the proper steps outlined in the instructions for such an event. In these instances, patients may face bleeding, hemorrhagic shock, or the need to convert to open surgery.
