One Person Killed in a Multi-Vehicle Accident Involving a Box Truck on Interstate 96 Near Portland, Lansing, Michigan

LANSING, Mich. — One person died Tuesday afternoon in a three-vehicle crash involving a semi-truck, a box truck, and a pickup truck on westbound I-96 near Portland.

Authorities believe the semi-truck had come to a complete stop in a merge zone due to traffic. A pickup truck behind the semi slowed or stopped, and the box truck following it was unable to stop in time.

The box truck crashed into the pickup, pushing it into the back of the semi’s trailer. Both the box truck and the pickup truck caught fire and were fully engulfed in flames. The pickup truck driver was trapped inside and did not survive.

The surviving family deserves answers

What a tragic incident that should have never happened. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) requires commercial trucks to maintain a safe stopping distance. So why didn’t that happen here?

We often see large trucks disregarding basic traffic rules, such as failing to adjust speed, leading to serious accidents with devastating consequences.
