Medtronic Recalls Defective Ventilators Due to Risks Tied to Injuries and Death


Medtronic is recalling select models of its Newport HT70 and HT70 Plus ventilators due to a defect that may cause the devices to shut down unexpectedly or fail to sound a shutdown alarm, posing serious safety risks to patients.

According to the company, the issue has been connected to two reported injuries and one death. Medtronic has also recalled certain related service parts and advised customers to discontinue using the affected devices.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has classified the action as a Class I recall, the most serious type, indicating that use of the ventilators could result in injury or death. So far, there have been 63 reports related to the malfunction. The FDA states that nearly 4,850 affected ventilators are currently in circulation globally.
