Dump Truck Driver Killed After Tire Blowout Leads to Accident on US-23 in Washtenaw County, Michigan

WASHTENAW COUNTY, Mich. — A 47-year-old man from Flint was killed Monday evening after the dump truck he was driving crashed along US-23 in Washtenaw County.

According to Michigan State Police, the driver was traveling south near the Northfield Rest Area when a tire on the 1994 Western Star dump truck blew out, causing the driver to lose control.

The vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree. Emergency crews extricated the driver from the wreckage, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Commercial truck tires should not have blowouts

When a tire blows out on a commercial truck, some people may view it as a stroke of bad luck or an issue with its maintenance. Some may even think no one is at fault for the tire failure. However, this is not the case: there are many instances where the tire manufacturer failed to produce a truck tire with the highest safety standards, causing the tire to become defective and prone to premature blowouts. This is never acceptable, and when it happens, and someone gets harmed, the manufacturer needs to be held accountable.

We are currently handling a similar case where our client, driving a tractor-trailer in Arizona, experienced a sudden tire failure. Despite efforts to control the truck, it rolled over, resulting in severe injuries that have permanently impacted his life. The tire manufacturer is trying to blame our client for not controlling the truck after the blowout and is pointing fingers at his employer for not maintaining the tire properly. However, when we examined the tire, we found that the tire suffered a tread separation due to manufacturing defects, placing the blame squarely on the manufacturer.

Tire failure on the road is a serious problem. Manufacturers must be held accountable for producing unsafe tires that endanger the lives of truckers and other motorists. We must take decisive action to prevent such accidents from occurring in the future.
