Madison Stouder Injured in a Semi-Truck Tire Blowout Accident on U.S. 30 in Atwood, Indiana

ATWOOD, Ind. — A driver was hospitalized Thursday morning after debris from a semi-truck tire blew across the median and struck her vehicle on U.S. Highway 30, according to the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office. Emergency responders were called to the scene between County Roads 500W and 650W.

According to reports, a semi-truck traveling eastbound experienced a tire failure, causing part of the tire to detach and launch across the grassy median.

The debris struck a westbound 2023 Kia Seltos driven by 19-year-old Madison Stouder of Bremen, breaking through the driver’s side window. The force of the impact caused the vehicle’s airbags to deploy and left Stouder with injuries to her face and shoulder.

No further details are currently available.

Commercial truck tire accidents must be investigated

Whenever someone suffers injuries through no fault of their own, the parties responsible have some answering to do. Answers to questions like: What caused this tire blowout? And could it have been prevented?

The trucking company will have to give an account of the truck’s maintenance. Did the trucking company conduct regular inspections and maintenance on the truck to prevent an accident like this from happening? Or did they neglect to repair a known issue with the tire, instead choosing to provide a fast, temporary fix that was bound to lead to a hazardous situation if not tended to soon?

It is also possible that the tire was defective from the start. Defective tires often reveal signs of poor bonding or flawed construction. Poor bonding occurs when the internal layers of the tire aren’t adequately sealed, leading to smooth patches and internal rubbing. Sloppy manufacturing can leave components misaligned or structurally weak. These flaws make a tire more likely to fail under normal driving conditions, and when that happens, the manufacturer should be held accountable.

Only a thorough investigation by trained professionals can reveal what went wrong and what steps should be taken next. One thing is for sure, though—the injured woman deserves answers, justice, and compensation for what happened to her.

I hope the injured woman makes a swift and complete recovery and finds the answers she needs.
