One Killed Following Accident with Semi-truck on U.S. 301 in Alachua County, Florida

HAWTHORNE, Fla. — A fatal crash Thursday morning on U.S. Highway 301 near Southeast Hawthorne Road claimed the life of a 25-year-old man from St. Petersburg.

The incident occurred when the man’s vehicle, traveling north in the inside lane, collided with a truck tractor turning left onto the highway. Authorities say the car struck the left rear axle of the trailer, which was being towed by the truck.

The driver, who was wearing a seatbelt at the time, was pronounced dead at the scene.

No further information is currently available.

The surviving family deserves answers as to what caused this collision

What went wrong here? Is this a case of failure to yield? Failure to yield is one of the main reasons large trucks cause fatalities (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety). In 2018, trucks failing to yield caused 226 deaths (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration).

While not enough details about this incident have been released to draw definitive conclusions, we know that similar incidents have been caused by one driver who failed to yield.

To find out all the factors that led to this incident, we must go beyond the initial police report. Dashcam footage and the truck’s speed and braking data from the black box will provide important information about the events leading up to the crash.

Gathering all the necessary information is crucial to holding the responsible parties accountable.

Someone lost their life, and their surviving family deserves answers. If another driver’s negligence is to blame, the family deserves full and fair compensation for their immeasurable loss.
