Passenger Killed, Driver Seriously Injured in a Possible SUV Tire Blowout Accident Along Interstate 80 near Penryn Road in Placer County, California

PLACER COUNTY, Calif. – A woman is dead and a man is hospitalized following a single-vehicle crash along Interstate 80 near Penryn Road.

The crash involved a Toyota 4Runner traveling westbound when the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, veered off the roadway, and struck a tree on the right shoulder.

Authorities believe a blown tire may have contributed to the loss of control, but it has not been confirmed.

Emergency responders transported the male driver to the hospital with suspected major injuries. The female passenger died at the scene. Both individuals were wearing seatbelts.

The names of those involved have not been released.

The cause of the tire failure has to be investigated

Sadly, I’ve handled hundreds of similar cases where a sudden tire failure ends in tragedy. These blowouts aren’t always the result of bad luck, wear and tear, or road conditions. Sometimes, they’re caused by defects that should never have made it onto the road. That’s why it’s essential for trained professionals to investigate what really caused the failure, not just assume it was unavoidable.

Defective tires often reveal signs of poor bonding or flawed construction. Poor bonding occurs when the internal layers of the tire aren’t adequately sealed, leading to smooth patches and internal rubbing. Sloppy manufacturing can leave components misaligned or structurally weak. These flaws make a tire more likely to fail under normal driving conditions, and when that happens, the manufacturer should be held accountable.

We’re currently representing a family devastated by a fatal rollover crash in New Mexico caused by a defective tire. The rear tire on their vehicle experienced catastrophic belt-to-belt tread separation, causing a total loss of control and a violent rollover. One person died. Others in the car, all family members, suffered life-altering injuries.

This tragedy didn’t have to happen. The manufacturer used aged materials, failed to bond the belts properly, and produced a tire with structural weaknesses. Despite knowing the dangers, they didn’t warn the public or correct the issue. Now, they’re trying to avoid accountability.

We’re fighting to hold that manufacturer responsible and to get answers for the family.

Families deserve to know exactly what happened, and if a company’s negligence contributed, they deserve justice.
