Victor Martinez Gelves Killed, Another Injured in a Work Accident at a Publix Construction Site in Clearwater, Florida

Clearwater, Florida – Authorities have confirmed that one worker has died and another was injured following a construction site accident Monday afternoon at a Publix development in Clearwater. Emergency crews responded to the scene at 1295 S. Missouri Avenue, where the new grocery store is under construction.

According to officials, two workers were injured when a scissor lift collapsed. Both individuals were transported from the site as trauma alerts.

One of the workers, identified as 38-year-old Victor Martinez Gelves of Davenport, was taken to Morton Plant Hospital, where he died. The second worker was transported to Bayfront Health and is reported to have sustained injuries that are not considered life-threatening.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has been notified.

Construction Site Tragedy Raises Serious Safety Concerns

What a tragic incident. Construction workers are the backbone of our communities, building the homes we live in, the schools our children attend, the supermarkets where we purchase our food.  And though their jobs are dangerous, they have a right, like everyone else, to work in a safe environment.

So what went wrong here?

A scissor lift collapse, like the one that claimed the life of a 38-year-old man at a Publix construction site, is rarely just a freak accident. These tragedies are often preventable and typically point to deeper safety issues. In many cases, the cause can be traced to mechanical failure or poor maintenance.

Scissor lifts must be routinely inspected and properly maintained to operate safely. When worn parts go unrepaired or hydraulic systems malfunction, the consequences can be catastrophic. In some instances, the lift may be wholly defective and fail for no reason at all.

Are any of these factors what contributed to this tragic accident?

These are the questions that must be answered. A full investigation is needed to determine what happened and whether this loss of life and serious injuries could have been prevented. If safety standards were ignored or equipment failed, the surviving family and the injured deserve answers—and accountability.
