Four Injured After Motorhome Accident Due to Tire Blowout on Interstate 15 in Washington County, Utah

Leeds, Utah – Four individuals from West Jordan were hospitalized after their motorhome rolled on northbound Interstate 15, according to the Utah Highway Patrol (UHP). The incident happened on Sunday afternoon.

The crash occurred when the motorhome reportedly suffered a tire blowout, causing the driver to lose control. The vehicle veered into the median and rolled, breaking apart in the process.

According to UHP Lieutenant, at least one occupant was ejected during the crash. Two individuals sustained serious injuries and were airlifted to the hospital, while the other two were transported by ambulance. None of the injuries are considered life-threatening, and all are expected to recover.

The freeway was also briefly shut down to allow medical helicopters to land.

RV tires are special and must be designed to account for long periods of sitting followed by long days of travel

While keeping your tires in good condition is important, sometimes a perfect tire fails because the tire is defective. This is especially concerning with RVs, which have a unique road use compared to other vehicles. RVs are designed to sit for long periods before being taken out on the road for long drives over many days. This is different from passenger vehicles, typically used daily or weekly by drivers, and 18-wheelers or other trucks, which routinely drive many miles over many days.

Defective RV tires are more common than many people realize. For instance, in 2022, Goodyear recalled nearly 170,000 RV tires due to defect risks that led to numerous accidents, injuries, and fatalities nationwide. We have assisted many RV owners who have experienced serious accidents caused by defective tires still in use on our roads. We just recently resolved one for a family in Florida after a husband and father died after his RV’s tire failed despite it being in proper working condition.

Recovering from such an accident can be long, challenging, and costly. If the tire that caused this crash is found to be defective, those injured deserve fair and just compensation from the manufacturer to help cover their expenses and ease the difficulties of their recovery.
