NHTSA Investigates Nearly 1.3 Million Ford F-150 Trucks Over Potential Transmission Defect

WASHINGTON – Federal safety regulators have launched an investigation into nearly 1.3 million Ford F-150 pickup trucks following reports of an unexpected transmission issue.

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced Monday that it has received 138 complaints regarding 2015-2017 F-150 models experiencing uncommanded downshifts, causing sudden deceleration.

According to the NHTSA, some complaints indicate that the downshift may lead to temporary locking or skidding of the rear wheels, increasing the risk of crashes and injuries.

The investigation focuses on F-150 trucks equipped with six-speed transmissions. Ford Motor Company spokesperson Maria Buczkowski confirmed that the automaker is cooperating with regulators in their review of the issue.

The NHTSA said it is conducting a preliminary evaluation to assess the extent and severity of the problem, which will determine whether a recall is necessary.
