Philips Recalls Tack Endovascular System, Halts Distribution Due to Safety Concerns

Philips has issued a recall for its Tack Endovascular System and ceased its distribution following concerns over user challenges that have led to additional medical procedures. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has classified the recall as a Class I, the most serious designation, indicating potential risks of serious injury or death.

The Tack Endovascular System is designed to treat peripheral arterial dissections following balloon angioplasty by securing damaged tissue to the inner lining of blood vessels. However, reports indicate that difficulties with the device have resulted in the need for additional interventions to retrieve or remove the implant.

While no fatalities have been reported, the recall cites 20 injuries and potential long-term complications, including pain, tissue loss, and restenosis. Philips has advised healthcare providers to discontinue use of the system immediately.

Healthcare professionals and patients affected by the recall are encouraged to report any adverse effects to the FDA’s MedWatch program.
