Ronald Kortz Killed in Accident with UPS Truck in Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS – Authorities are investigating a fatal crash involving a motorcyclist and a UPS truck on the near northeast side of Indianapolis.

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department reported that officers responded to the 3200 block of North Keystone Avenue near East 32nd Street for a crash involving injuries. When officers arrived, they attempted to provide medical aid to an adult male motorcyclist. However, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The motorcyclist has been identified as 53-year-old Ronald Kortz II.

An investigation is needed to determine what caused this accident

Riding a motorcycle can be one of the most carefree experiences but also one of the most dangerous. Motorcycle road collisions account for a large percentage of vehicle crash fatalities. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, in 2021, close to 6100 motorcyclists got killed in a motorcycle collision, accounting for 14 percent of all vehicle crash deaths.

While the causes of these fatal accidents vary in bearing responsibility, these fatalities often result from vehicles, like large trucks (that weigh over 35,000 pounds), failing to practice extreme caution, or driving carelessly next to a vehicle an average of 700 pounds (motorcycle).  Truck drivers must drive with the safety of all types of vehicles in mind. Failure to do so can result in a recipe for disaster, resulting in severe injury or death of one of the most vulnerable motorists on the roads — motorcyclists.

An investigation will be needed to determine exactly what happened. Did the truck make an unsafe lane change? Was there a mechanical issue with the motorcycle? Answers to these questions will help provide answers in the wake of this tragic accident.

If the UPS truck shares any fault, they will need to answer to the surviving family.

Our thoughts are with the family: may they find the answers and support they need during this difficult time.
