Two Injured in a Semitruck Accident on Kennedy Expressway in Chicago, Illinois


CHICAGO – Two motorists were injured Tuesday night when steel pipes fell from a semi-truck on the outbound Kennedy Expressway, according to Illinois State Police. The incident occurred in the northbound lanes of I-90 near Lake Street.

Authorities said the truck was traveling on the expressway when its load of steel pipes came loose, striking at least three vehicles, including a taxi.

Emergency responders transported two motorists to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

Victims injured by falling cargo deserve compensation for injuries

The Federal Motor Safety Carrier Association (FMSCA) has strict guidelines for how trucks should secure their loads. Cargo that can easily roll must be secured and held in place by chocks, wedges, cradles, tie-downs, and other means that will not come unfastened or loose while the vehicle is in transit.

Did this truck have any of these structures to help keep the steel pipes from falling loose? Who helped secure the load onto the truck? Were inspections made to ensure the transport was within guidelines? Shipping companies also have a duty to load the vehicle properly. What actions did they take to ensure this did not happen?

Motorists deserve to travel to their destinations with peace of mind knowing that these rules are being followed.  That did not happen here. Two people sustained injuries due to someone’s failure to secure a load before transport properly. The driver, the motor carrier, and the shipping company may all be partially responsible for this crash.
