Two People Injured in Workplace Electrocution Accident in Oconee County, South Carolina

Oconee County, SC – Two people were hospitalized Thursday morning following an incident at an electrical substation in Westminster, according to New Horizon Electric Cooperative.

Emergency responders were notified regarding two workers who may have been electrocuted. Upon arrival, emergency personnel found coworkers providing aid to the injured employees. One worker was transported by ambulance to a hospital in the Greenville area, while the other was airlifted to a burn center in Augusta, Georgia.

New Horizon Electric Cooperative later confirmed that both employees were in stable condition.

Workplace electrocution accidents must be investigated

According to the CDC’s NIOSH, electrical hazards cause 4,000 worker injuries yearly: we must do more to protect our workers.

Many factors can lead to electrocutions on the job. Companies must ensure workers receive proper training in electrical wiring, that all electrical equipment is correctly grounded or double-insulated, and that extension and power cords are regularly checked for wear and tear. These are just the basic steps needed to help prevent electrical accidents. Were these safety protocols followed at this worksite?

When companies fail to provide workers with the necessary tools and training to do their jobs safely, they should be held accountable when someone gets hurt.

Regarding this incident, if negligence or wrongdoing played a role in this worker’s electrocution, those responsible must provide answers and be held accountable.

I hope the injured workers fully recover and get the necessary answers to move forward.
