Santa Cruz Recalls Defective Electric Bikes Due to Fire Risk


According to an announcement from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, thousands of Santa Cruz electric bicycles have been recalled following multiple reports of battery fires. The recall affects approximately 2,850 Heckler 9 Electric Bicycles sold across the United States and about 550 units distributed in Canada.

The issue involves the bike’s 720W lithium-ion battery, which can overheat and pose a fire hazard. The battery is housed beneath the bike’s frame in a black case. Officials reported three incidents of battery-related fires linked to the recalled models.

The bicycles, made in the U.S., were sold at Santa Cruz dealerships nationwide from October 2021 through January 2025. Prices ranged from $8,750 to $13,900 and come in various colors, including Gloss Avocado Green and Maritime Gray.
