Felix Lopez, Reginald Magee, and Felipe Mendez Killed in a Scaffolding Collapse Accident at Port Arthur LNG Construction Site in Texas

PORT ARTHUR, Texas – An industrial accident Tuesday morning at the Port Arthur LNG construction site claimed the lives of three workers, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. The incident occurred at the facility on South Gulfway Drive, beyond the Intracoastal Canal Bridge and within Port Arthur city limits.

Authorities say scaffolding at the site collapsed, causing multiple workers to fall.

Felix Lopez, Reginald Magee, and Felipe Mendez have been identified as the deceased.

No further information is currently available.

The surviving family deserves to know what went wrong at this work site

It is always devastating to learn of individuals who wake up in the morning, leave their homes to make a living, and provide a service, only to not return home because of a fatal work accident. A work accident that was most likely preventable and caused by a safety lapse or malfunction. When this happens, the surviving family deserves to know what went wrong.

The grieving families deserve answers. Those in charge have a duty to ensure a safe work environment by properly organizing job sites, providing the necessary safety equipment, and offering thorough safety training. Were these safety protocols properly implemented at this construction site? Were the suspension scaffolds securely fastened? Did the workers have sufficient fall protection, such as guardrails or personal fall-arrest systems? These safety measures play an essential role in preventing scaffolding accidents.

We know that losing a loved one is a profound and painful experience, especially when it happens unexpectedly. The emotional and financial burdens can be overwhelming. When another’s negligence causes this loss, the affected family should have the right to seek justice and hold those at fault accountable.

Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that more construction workers lost their lives on the job in 2022 than in any other industry. We must take stronger steps to ensure the safety of our workers, who are the backbone of America.
