Semitruck Accident on Interstate 96 in Ionia County, Michigan, Leaves Okemos Man Dead, Several Injured

BOSTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A man from Okemos was killed and multiple people were injured when a semitrailer slammed into stopped traffic along eastbound I-96 in western Ionia County on Saturday evening.

According to Michigan State Police, the collision occurred in a construction zone. The semi failed to stop and struck several vehicles that were halted in traffic. Authorities reported that the crash involved nine vehicles, including the semitrailer.

The number of injured individuals and the extent of their injuries were not immediately disclosed.

Construction zone accidents are happening too often. What makes these tragic collisions even worse is that they are entirely preventable and caused when safety driving practices are disregarded.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) mandates that commercial trucks stop at a safe distance (310 feet when running at 60 mph) and that tractor-trailers have functioning brakes. Truckers should be held accountable when they fail to follow safety rules and their actions cause someone to lose their life.
