Child Seriously Burned in a Tabletop Fireplace Accident in Morgan Hill, California

MORGAN HILL, Calif. — A 3-year-old boy is recovering from serious injuries after a tabletop fireplace malfunctioned while he was making s’mores with family, authorities said. The incident happened inside a Morgan Hill home on a Wednesday evening.

According to reports, the child was with his uncle and cousins when the tabletop fireplace suddenly caught fire. The flames escaped through the two glass walls surrounding the device, spreading outward.

The child suffered second- and third-degree burns to his face, neck, and arms, covering about 15 percent of his body.

People affected by dangerous tabletop fire pits deserve answers and justice

What should have been a simple evening of making s’mores with family turned into a tragedy. Instead of creating sweet memories, this child now faces months of painful recovery, permanent scarring, and the emotional trauma of an accident that never should have happened. These tabletop fire devices have no place in people’s homes. Yet, they continue to be sold and marketed to unsuspecting families as safe and harmless fun.

Tabletop fire pits are extremely dangerous. These products, often sold as fire pots, portable fireplaces, or miniature indoor fire pits, pose severe burn and fire risks, including flame jetting and uncontrolled flare-ups, especially when fuel is ignited or refilled.

The main hazard lies in a common design flaw: users are instructed to pour flammable liquids, such as isopropyl alcohol, directly into an open reservoir and then ignite them in the same space. Flame jetting can occur if a small, nearly invisible flame remains during refueling, igniting vapors and causing a sudden, violent burst of fire. These devices can burn at temperatures exceeding 1,600°F, leaving little time to react when something goes wrong.

No family should have to watch a child suffer for something so preventable. No parent should be left wondering how a product sold for family fun could cause such devastation. These moments change lives forever — and they demand accountability.

Consumers have the right to know the dangers associated with these products. Those who have been seriously burned deserve answers, justice, and compensation for their life-altering injuries.
