Driver Airlifted with Serious Injuries After Rollover Accident Along Indian Valley Road in San Luis Obispo County, California

SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY, Calif. — A 30-year-old woman was airlifted with major injuries Tuesday afternoon after her pickup truck rolled down a cliff along Indian Valley Road near the Monterey County line.

According to reports, the woman was driving a 2002 GMC Sierra when the truck entered a curve, veered off the west edge of the roadway, and tumbled down the cliffside before landing upright in a grassy area.

Emergency crews extricated the woman from the vehicle, and she was flown by helicopter to Marian Regional Medical Center in Santa Maria with serious injuries.

Authorities said alcohol or drug impairment does not appear to have contributed to the crash.

Vehicles need to be checked for defects in rollover crashes

Drivers are expected to drive safely. But manufacturers are expected to build vehicles that keep people safe. The vehicles we drive should protect us from injury, not be the primary cause of it.

There is a misbelief that the driver alone is to blame for injuries sustained in rollover crashes, especially when only one vehicle is involved. However, it is not this simple. While drivers should be cautious to prevent rollovers, manufacturers also play an essential role in keeping occupants safe in their vehicles during such accidents.

Manufacturers have a responsibility to design safe vehicles. Manufacturers are well aware of the dangers of rollover accidents and have a responsibility to ensure that the vehicles they produce can protect occupants in a rollover crash. When they do not do this, they are responsible for the injuries suffered in a rollover crash.

Many SUV models have a history of failing to withstand rollovers. These vehicles have failed to protect occupants from further injury and have increased the risks of injury during a rollover. Common problems (or defects) in these vehicles include seatbelts that fail to restrain occupants, airbags that do not deploy, and roofs that collapse, potentially crushing occupants inside. When these basic safety features fail, people get seriously hurt or die.

While we do not have enough details about this incident or the vehicle, we know that these types of vehicles have often failed to fully protect their occupants. A thorough investigation examining all the facts can help determine whether the vehicle in question may have been defective. But this requires skilled lawyers and trained professionals with extensive experience in dealing with manufacturers and defective vehicles.

We hope the injured woman and her family find the answers they deserve.
