William Irvine Seriously Injured After Accident with Semi-truck on Highway 56 in Smithville, Tennessee

SMITHVILLE, Tenn. — A man was flown to a Nashville hospital after his vehicle collided with a semi-trailer Thursday evening on Highway 56 near County House Road.

Troopers reported that William Irvine of Smithville sustained a head injury when his Nissan Rogue struck the side of a semi-trailer positioned across the northbound lane.

According to authorities, the semi-truck was in the process of backing down County House Road when the collision occurred. Authorities say limited visibility from darkness and weather conditions contributed to the crash.

Irvine was transported by helicopter to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for treatment.

The truck driver was cited for improper backing.

Ā When Truck Drivers Back into Roadways: Who Is Responsible for the Crash?

It’s a step in the right direction that the truck driver was cited for improper backing, but a citation alone does not resolve the harm that was caused. A head injury is serious. Even when someone survives the initial impact, traumatic brain injuries can lead to long-term medical treatment, memory loss, reduced mobility, and lifelong complications.

We recently represented a case very similar to this one. A negligent driver in Texas truck recklessly backed onto a busy highway, directly into the path of oncoming traffic. This blatant disregard for safety led to a catastrophic crash, leaving innocent motorists with severe injuries.

As expected, the trucking company attempted to deflect responsibility, despite clear evidence of their driver’s dangerous actions. Beyond the driver’s negligence, the company itself failed to implement proper safety training and procedures to prevent such reckless maneuvers. This level of negligence is unacceptable, and we fought to ensure that those responsible were held fully accountable for the harm they had caused our clients.

Mr. Irvine deserves the same justice and accountability.

Our thoughts are with Mr. Irvine, and we hope he makes a full recovery soon.
