Allendale Man Killed in a Bicycle–Semi-truck Accident in the area of 72nd Avenue and Barry Street in Blendon Township, Michigan

BLENDON TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A 54-year-old Allendale man died Wednesday after a semi-truck struck his bicycle at an intersection in Blendon Township.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the bicyclist had been traveling south on 72nd Avenue and attempted to turn east onto Barry Street when he was hit by the southbound truck, driven by a 78-year-old Kent City man.

The bicyclist suffered fatal injuries.

Investigation Must Go Beyond Initial Crash Report to Protect Vulnerable Cyclists

In tragic crashes like this one, family members are left asking why this happened and what went wrong. They are left with lingering questions that initial reports may be unable to answer.

As more people choose bicycles for transportation, we must remember they are among our most vulnerable road users. The size difference between commercial trucks and bicycles means even a minor error can have devastating consequences. This is why truck drivers must maintain constant vigilance.

We do not have enough details to determine what went wrong here. However, we know that looking beyond the initial crash report is crucial in these types of cases. The trucking company holds vital information: driver training records, hours-of-service logs, truck data showing speed and braking patterns, and possible dashcam footage. This evidence can reveal whether proper safety protocols were followed or whether warning signs went unaddressed.

But both drivers and companies sometimes hesitate to share details openly. When this happens, legal tools like depositions become necessary to uncover the full story. Families deserve to know exactly what led to their loved one’s injury or loss.

Establishing accountability in these cases helps ensure safer streets for cyclists sharing our roads. A thorough investigation protects not only current victims but also future riders.

We hope all the details come to light soon.
