Republic Man Killed in Motorcycle–Semi-truck Accident West of Highway MM on Sawyer Road in Missouri

REPUBLIC, Mo. — A 67-year-old Republic man died Saturday afternoon after his motorcycle was hit by a semi-truck on Sawyer Road.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred west of Highway MM when a westbound 2007 Freightliner attempted a left turn and entered the path of the eastbound 2022 Kawasaki motorcycle.

The motorcyclist was taken to Cox South Hospital, where he was pronounced dead by medical staff. Troopers reported that he was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

The family of the motorcyclist deserves answers and justice

A sudden loss of a loved one to a roadway accident leaves a family facing profound grief and difficult questions. When a life ends so unexpectedly, loved ones want to know exactly what went wrong and whether it could have been prevented.

When a motorcycle and a turning semi-truck collide, it often raises concerns about whether the larger vehicle followed the rules meant to protect more vulnerable road users. Motorcyclists have far less protection in any crash, and when a truck enters their path during a turn, the consequences are almost always catastrophic. A momentary lapse in judgment, a driver turning too soon, misjudging distance, or failing to scan for oncoming traffic properly, can take someone’s life in an instant.

And while truck drivers have a duty to operate these large vehicles with care, it’s not uncommon for drivers or their companies to deflect, minimize, or shift blame when something goes wrong.

We recently represented a family in Kentucky who lost their father in a similar collision. There, the motorcyclist struck a tractor-trailer that had blocked both lanes while turning, in violation of multiple state and federal safety rules. The evidence showed the rider had no opportunity to avoid the crash. Beyond the driver’s mistakes, the trucking company was also liable for failing to properly train and supervise its drivers. We fought to hold all those who were accountable responsible.

We hope the surviving family in this tragic incident also finds the answers they deserve.
