One Person Killed, Another Injured in a Fiery Accident Involving a Tanker Truck on the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Worcester Township, Pennsylvania

WORCESTER TOWNSHIP, Pa. — One person died, and another was hospitalized, Saturday morning after a tanker truck carrying jet fuel collided with two stopped vehicles on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

Investigators said a vehicle traveling in the far-right lane suffered a flat tire and came to a stop. A second vehicle pulled up behind it and also stopped, activating its hazard lights. The approaching tanker truck was unable to slow down in time and struck both vehicles.

The impact triggered a large fire. The driver of the second vehicle died at the scene, authorities said. A passenger was transported for medical treatment.

Trucking crashes highlight the importance of proper following distance

Tragic. The second vehicle managed to come to a complete stop and even activated its hazard lights. So why was the tanker truck unable to do the same? Large commercial trucks are expected to maintain a safe following distance and keep enough space to brake when traffic slows or stops ahead. When that doesn’t happen, so much can go wrong, as seen here, where a person passed and another was injured.

Yet in our experience, trucking companies often try to present a different narrative. In cases just like this, we have seen them try to deflect responsibility and even shift attention to the vehicle experiencing a mechanical problem. But they should be held accountable to the fullest when negligent actions cause others great harm. Experienced commercial truck attorneys help make sure that happens.

The surviving family and the injured deserve better. They deserve answers, and they deserve justice.
