Samantha Serna Killed and Three People Seriously Injured in a Rollover Tire Blowout Accident on U.S. Highway 277 Near Eagle Pass, Texas

Eagle Pass, Texas — A single-vehicle rollover crash on U.S. Highway 277 near Eagle Pass resulted in the death of one person and serious injuries to three others. The incident happened on Friday afternoon.

According to authorities, the crash occurred when the left rear tire on a westbound 2005 Chevrolet Silverado sustained a tire blowout. The vehicle veered off the highway, overturned, and struck a fence before coming to rest upright.

Four people were inside the truck. The driver was taken to a hospital in Eagle Pass. Two passengers were flown to University Hospital in San Antonio for treatment. 31-year-old passenger Samantha Serna, a resident of Roma, Texas, was airlifted to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, where she later died from her injuries.

Tire Blowouts on Pickup Trucks Raise Serious Safety Concerns

Tire blowouts happen suddenly and without warning, and the outcome can be catastrophic, as seen here, where one person died and three others suffered serious injury.

Most people believe tire blowouts are rare events. They assume the cause is bad luck or poor tire maintenance. Most people never consider that a tire can fail because it was defective from the start, but it happens, and when it does, the driver is not at fault.

Defective tires have a design or construction defect originating with the manufacturer. The responsibility lies with the manufacturer who allowed a dangerous product on the road.

I have handled numerous cases involving tire blowouts, including crashes in which a left-rear tire failed, the driver lost control, and the vehicle veered off or into oncoming traffic. These accidents had something else in common: they all involved Ford trucks.

The family of Ms. Serna and those critically injured also deserve answers. A thorough investigation beyond the police report can reveal the cause of the tire blowout in this incident. If defects are suspected and confirmed, those responsible should be held accountable.

Our thoughts are with Ms. Serna’s family, the injured, and everyone impacted by this tragic accident.
