Distracted Semi-truck Driver Causes Fatal Multi-Vehicle Accident on Interstate 90 Near Bozeman, Montana

Bozeman, Montana — A 42-year-old Bozeman woman was killed Wednesday afternoon in a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 90, according to the Montana Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred when a truck driver from Billings, operating a Peterbilt in the eastbound lane, failed to slow for traffic in a construction zone. According to reports, the driver was traveling at highway speeds when the truck struck several vehicles that had slowed for construction.

The semi first collided with a Volkswagen Golf driven by the Bozeman woman, who died at the scene. The truck continued forward, striking a Subaru driven by a 69-year-old woman from Laurel and forcing it into a Ford Explorer driven by a 35-year-old man with a passenger. All three vehicles and the truck came to rest off the right side of the interstate.

Authorities said the truck driver later told troopers he had been checking his email at the time of the crash.

Families deserve answers and accountability when negligent actions cause fatal truck collisions

Checking an email while driving. It sounds unthinkable to most people, but not to us. We’ve seen it too many times —lives lost, people suffering life-altering injuries, families left shattered, all because a large truck driver chose to text, check social media, or even stream a show while driving a fully loaded semi down a busy highway. These are not accidents, these are choices.

In incidents like this, where fault seems obvious, people often assume the process will be simple, that responsibility will be clear, and that justice will follow quickly. Unfortunately, that’s rarely what happens. Trucking companies will do all they can to minimize or shift blame. Their goal is to protect the company, limit liability, and control the narrative before the family even has a chance to ask questions.

Those whose lives are forever changed and have to live with the consequences of the negligent action that caused this crash deserve more. They deserve answers and complete justice.

But commercial truck accident cases are not like ordinary car crashes— they involve complex layers of liability. For full accountability to happen, these incidents require experienced legal professionals who understand the tactics of commercial trucking companies.

Crashes like this should never happen. The surviving family and those injured deserve answers and accountability.
