Sylvester Stinson Killed in a Rollover Accident Along Cypress Campground Road in Berkeley County, South Carolina

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. — The identity of the driver who lost his life in a rollover collision along Cypress Campground Road on Sunday afternoon has been released.

The victim has been identified as 45-year-old Sylvester Stinson III of Walterboro.

According to authorities, a 2006 Ford F-150 traveling west left the right side of the roadway, crossed to the left, and then overturned.

Stinson, the sole occupant, died from injuries sustained in the crash.

Defective trucks can cause serious injury or death in a rollover crash

After a fatal single-vehicle accident, much attention will go to the actions of the driver. Was the driver speeding? Distracted? Under the influence? What caused them to lose control? These are all valid questions. But one very important question is often overlooked: Did their vehicle do its job and protect them from further injury? Sadly, many times, the answer is no.

We trust that our trucks are built for safety and protection. Manufacturers do have a duty to provide the public with safe vehicles. But certain truck models have a history of failing to protect their occupants. These vehicles can have seatbelts that do not restrain, airbags that fail to deploy, and roofs that collapse and crush occupants.

We recently took on a tragic case involving a fatal rollover crash in Nevada caused by a dangerously defective pickup truck. The vehicle rolled over, and its weak roof structure collapsed, crushing the occupant’s survival space and leading to fatal injuries.

This tragedy was entirely preventable. Ford had long known about the dangers of roof crush in rollover accidents but failed to strengthen the F-250’s roof or implement available safety technologies. Instead, they prioritized cost-cutting over human lives. Now, they are trying to avoid responsibility.

We are fighting to hold the manufacturer accountable for its negligence and to seek justice for the grieving family. No one should lose their life because a manufacturer failed to ensure basic vehicle safety, and when they do, those responsible should be held accountable.

Mr. Stinson’s family also deserves answers. Rollover accidents involving defective trucks can be pretty complex and require experienced professionals who will look beyond the initial accident and have extensive knowledge of vehicle defects and manufacturer litigation.

Our hearts go out to this surviving family. We know the sudden loss of a loved one brings great grief and many questions. We hope they find the answers they deserve.
