Black Diamond Recalls Allegedly Defective Avalanche Transceivers Over Signal Failure Risk: Fatality and Injury Reported


SALT LAKE CITY — Black Diamond is recalling specific PIEPS DSP avalanche transceivers after reports that the devices can unexpectedly switch modes, disrupting emergency communication during an avalanche.

The recall covers PIEPS DSP Pro, DSP Pro Ice, and DSP Sport models. These transceivers can shift out of transmit mode if not properly locked or secured in the harness, preventing them from sending a signal. In an avalanche, this malfunction could make it difficult for rescuers to locate a skier, increasing the risk of serious injury or death.

Black Diamond has received 65 reports of the devices switching modes during use. One death and another incident where a skier was injured after being caught in an avalanche have been linked to the malfunction.
