BEAL SAS Recalls Allegedly Defective Birdie Belay Devices Due to Risk of Falls and Serious Injury


BEAL SAS has announced a recall of its Birdie Belay Devices after reports that the product may pose a safety hazard to climbers. The company stated that the devices can fail during use, potentially preventing the user from lowering the climber safely.

The Birdie Belay Device is used in rock climbing to secure climbers, stop falls, and control lowering on the rope. The recalled devices were manufactured with an orange, blue, or green handle and are marked with the batch year “/19” on the side. Only units with this marking are affected.

According to the recall notice, at least three incidents have been reported in which the device’s hand lever detached, leaving the user unable to lower the climber.
