Eight Killed, After Semi-Truck and Van Accident Sparks Fire on Interstate 85 in Jackson County, Georgia

JACKSON COUNTY, Ga. – Eight people were killed Monday afternoon in a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 85 after a semi-truck rear-ended a van, causing it to erupt in flames. The collision occurred in Jackson County, about 60 miles northeast of Atlanta.

According to authorities, the semi-truck was following too closely behind a Dodge van when it struck the vehicle, igniting a fire that consumed the van. All eight occupants of the van were pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities later confirmed that an eighth victim was discovered during recovery operations. Four additional vehicles were involved in what investigators described as a chain-reaction crash following the initial impact, including a van transporting cats to a partner shelter.

It is unknown at this time whether there are any additional injuries.

The victims’ identities have not yet been released.

Surviving families deserve answers and justice

So many lives shattered. Why? Commercial truck drivers are well aware of their responsibility to keep a safe distance from the vehicle ahead. This truck driver, for whatever reason, broke protocol by tailgating, cutting many lives short, and leaving countless others grieving to no end.

Sadly, accidents like this one are not rare. We recently took on a case very similar in Texas. A truck hauling freight for multiple logistics companies violently rear-ended a passenger vehicle, killing three innocent people, including children.

This tragedy was entirely preventable. The truck driver failed to notice a slower-moving vehicle with a flat tire, and the companies responsible for hiring and monitoring the driver neglected their duty to ensure proper safety protocols were in place. Now, they are trying to avoid responsibility.

We fought to hold both the driver and the involved trucking companies accountable for their gross negligence, ensuring justice for the victims and their grieving families. No family should ever have to suffer such an unimaginable loss at the hands of someone else’s negligence.

The same rings true here. I hope the families and others impacted find the answers and accountability they deserve.
