Jose Bonilla Killed and Israel Medellin Seriously Injured After Truck Tire Strikes Road Crew on East Freeway in Houston, Texas


HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — A road crew worker was killed, and another worker was seriously injured, on Thursday morning after a tire from an 18-wheeler broke loose and struck several people. The incident happened along Monmouth Street near the East Freeway.

According to Deputies, the incident occurred while a crew was repaving the northbound lane of Monmouth. The 18-wheeler was traveling west on the freeway when it lost multiple wheels. One of the tires bounced from the main lanes, striking equipment and members of the work crew.

Authorities identified the worker killed as Jose Bonilla. Crew member Israel Medellin sustained serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
