FDA Announces Class I Recall of Allegedly Defective Olympus Endoscope Needles Due to Reported Injuries and Death


WASHINGTON — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has classified a recall of certain Olympus ViziShot 2 FLEX Needles as a Class I recall, the agency’s most serious designation, due to potential risks to patient safety.

The affected devices may have a deformed a-traumatic tip, which can compromise safe use during procedures. The recall applies to products manufactured before May 12.

According to the FDA, there have been 14 reported injuries and one death linked to the defect. Olympus had previously initiated a voluntary recall of the devices in September.
