Woman Airlifted After Accident with Semi-truck on State Route 53 in Sandusky County, Ohio

SANDUSKY COUNTY, Ohio — A 26-year-old Lakeside Marblehead woman was seriously injured Monday afternoon when her SUV collided with a semi-truck on state Route 53.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the semi was backing into a nearby field to pick up a load when the southbound SUV struck the middle of the trailer and became trapped underneath.

Emergency crews extricated the driver from the vehicle before she was flown by air ambulance to a hospital for treatment.

When Truck Drivers Back into Roadways: Who Is Responsible for the Crash?

Backing a semi-truck on an active highway is one of the most dangerous actions a driver can take. Commercial trucks have large blind spots and limited visibility, so backing into a field from a highway is an unsafe maneuver that requires the driver to follow all safety rules.

In incidents like this, we must ask: Did the truck driver have a safe way to enter the field without blocking traffic? Were hazard lights, flashers, or a spotter used? Did the trucking company train and supervise this driver to prevent exactly this kind of situation?

Knowing all the factors that led to this collision will provide the injured woman with the support she needs if the truck shares any fault in this tragic incident.

The facts will speak for themselves. Many times, this means going beyond the police report and looking at the safety protocols of the trucking company and its drivers.

Our well-wishes to the injured young woman. May she make a full recovery and find the answers she needs.
