Drive DeVilbiss Healthcare Recalls Nearly 500,000 Allegedly Defective Adult Portable Bed Rails Following Reports of Entrapment Deaths

WASHINGTON – Drive DeVilbiss Healthcare is recalling four models of its adult portable bed rails due to serious entrapment and asphyxiation hazards.

The recall follows reports of two deaths linked to the company’s Bed Assist Handle bed rails. In both cases, the bed rails were not securely fastened to the bed, and the users became trapped between the rail and the mattress.

The recall includes about 496,100 units of the following models:

  • Model 15064 Bed Assist Handle – about 21 inches high and 12 inches wide
  • Model 15062 Bed Assist Rail with Folding Board – about 23 inches high and 12 inches wide
  • Model RTL15073 Home Bed Assist Handle – adjustable height between 13 and 17 inches, 19 inches wide
  • Model RTL15063-ADJ Home Bed Assist Handle – adjustable height between 15 and 20 inches, 20 inches wide

The products are constructed from steel tubing in white or chrome. Some models include black non-slip padding or a wooden under-bed board. The name “Drive” and the model number appear on a label affixed to the rail’s metal tubing.

The recalled bed rails were sold through medical supply outlets nationwide as well as online retailers, including Amazon.com and Walmart.com.
