Generac and DR Recall Allegedly Defective Portable Generators for Finger Injury Hazard


WAUKESHA, Wis. – Generac Power Systems has recalled select 6500-watt and 8000-watt portable generators, including certain DR-branded models, after reports that the handles can cause serious finger injuries.

According to the recall, the flip-up pin-lock handles on the affected units can move unexpectedly, pinching a user’s fingers against the generator’s frame when the equipment is being relocated. This defect poses risks of crushing or amputation.

The recall applies to Generac models XT8000E, XT8000EFI, GP6500, GP6500E, GP8000E, and HomeLink 6500E, as well as DR models PRO 6500M and PRO 6500E. These gasoline-powered portable generators feature a U-shaped, two-grip handle and two wheels for mobility. Model and serial numbers are printed on the product label, and consumers can verify affected units on Generac’s website.

Generac has received eight injury reports linked to the problem, including seven finger amputations and one crushing injury.
