Medline Recalls 1.5 Million Defective Adult Bed Rails After Reports of Entrapment Deaths


WASHINGTON — Medline Industries has recalled about 1.5 million adult portable bed rails following reports of two deaths linked to the product.

The recall involves Medline’s Bed Assist Bar models MDS6800BA and MDS6800BAH. Officials said the rails can create dangerous gaps when attached to a bed, posing a risk that users may become trapped between the rail and mattress, leading to asphyxiation.

Medline confirmed two entrapment deaths tied to the product: a 76-year-old woman in a senior facility in Iowa in July 2019, and an 87-year-old woman in a residential care facility in South Carolina in November 2023.

The recalled products are made of black metal tubing with a rounded foam rubber grip handle and a fabric pouch. “Medline” and the model number are printed on a label located on the support frame near the vertical portion of the rail. Model MDS6800BA was sold individually, while model MDS6800BAH was sold in cases of three.
