Air Vent Inc. Recalls Defective Attic Fans Electric Motors Due to Risk of Fire


Air Vent Inc. has announced a recall of certain electric motors used in gable- and roof-mounted attic fans due to a potential fire hazard. Officials say the motors’ safety cutoff can fail, creating a risk of short circuit and fire.

The recall applies to models DOW-136-0-34-XIN, DOW-136-0-26-XIN, DOW-136-0-40-XIN, DOW-136-0-40-XIN-3/4”, and D-RE-PSC-127/20-4P1SP. A distinctive vent pattern on the motor end bells can identify affected units. Only motors with this design are included in the recall.

Air Vent has received 159 reports of incidents involving the recalled attic fan motors, including cases of burning and fire.

The products were sold nationwide through retailers and wholesalers, including ABC Supply, Lowe’s, and Beacon, both in-store and online, between August 2003 and December 2013. Prices ranged from about $74 to $92.
