Head Rush Technologies Recalls Defective TRUBLUE iQ Auto Belay Devices for Fall and Death Risk


WASHINGTON — Head Rush Technologies has issued a recall of its TRUBLUE iQ Auto Belay Devices after reports that the equipment can fail to retract, creating a fall hazard that could lead to serious injury or death.

The devices are used in climbing facilities to allow climbers to descend safely. The TRUBLUE iQ is gray with blue handles and a gray sash on the front, while the TRUBLUE iQ+ includes an added catch-and-hold brake. LT versions have blue tags above the blue webbing hand grip, and XL versions have a purple tag. Serial numbers within the affected ranges are printed on the handle and the bottom of each device.

The recall affects the following models and serial number ranges:

  • TRUBLUE iQ LT (12.5m): iQ0014492 through iQ0036407 — mounting height under 9m (29.5 ft)
  • TRUBLUE iQ XL (20m): iQXL01283 through iQXL02678 — mounting height under 17.5m (57.4 ft)
  • TRUBLUE iQ+ LT (12.5m): iQP00110 through iQP00161 — mounting height under 9m (29.5 ft)
  • TRUBLUE iQ+ LT (12.5m): iQP000164 through iQP000356 — mounting height under 9m (29.5 ft)
  • TRUBLUE iQ+ XL (20m): iQXLP0104 through iQXLP0182 — mounting height under 17.5m (57.4 ft)

Head Rush Technologies has received 31 reports of impaired retraction, including one fall incident.
