Moses Perry Injured in Single-Vehicle Rollover Accident on Interstate 90 Near Kittitas, Washington

KITTITAS COUNTY, Washington — A 58-year-old man was injured Saturday morning following a single-vehicle rollover crash on Interstate 90 east of Renslow near the town of Kittitas.

Troopers said the driver, identified as Moses Perry of Chimacum, lost control of his pickup truck. Authorities reported that the vehicle rolled and came to rest off the roadway in the median.

Perry sustained injuries in the crash and was transported to Kittitas Valley Hospital for treatment. The extent of his injuries has not been disclosed.

It is believed that defective equipment may have contributed to the crash. Officials also noted that drugs or alcohol were not believed to be factors.

Vehicles need to be checked for defects in rollover crashes

The news release states that defective equipment may have played a role in this collision. This is very concerning. Our vehicles should perform as intended, keeping us protected and safe on the road. So what went wrong here?

Was it a defective tire? A mechanical issue? We don’t have that information, but when “defective equipment” is identified, it points to a failure that may have begun long before the crash. In a rollover, control is everything. A tire that blows out or a mechanical failure can cause a driver to lose control in seconds, placing their life in danger.

When that happens, the next question is why the failure occurred in the first place. Was there a defect in the vehicle that should never have been there? Or was there a recent repair or maintenance issue that left the vehicle unsafe to drive? These are the kinds of failures that do not begin at the moment of impact: they begin earlier, in design, manufacturing, or in the work done on the vehicle before it was put back on the road.

When a failure like this is identified, the focus should not stop at the crash itself. It should include the vehicle’s condition, any recent repairs, and whether anything was missed or left unaddressed. In many cases, responsibility may extend beyond the driver to those who manufactured, maintained, or worked on the vehicle.

There are many unanswered questions right now. We hope Mr. Perry makes a full recovery and finds the answers he needs.
