One Killed, Seven Injured After Tire Blowout Accident Leads to Rollover on Interstate 4 in Orange County, Orlando, Florida

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — A passenger died following a crash Sunday morning on Interstate 4 near the Walt Disney World area.

Troopers said the crash occurred when a 2004 Chevrolet TrailBlazer traveling westbound experienced a blowout of its right rear tire. The vehicle lost control, rolled multiple times, and came to rest on the left shoulder and in the median.

During the crash, one passenger was ejected and struck by a vehicle traveling in that lane. The passenger was transported to a nearby hospital, where they were later pronounced dead.

The driver of the TrailBlazer and six additional passengers were taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center for treatment.

Vehicle Tire Must Be Examined for Potential Defects After Crash

What a tragic incident. Tire blowouts can happen in an instant and with such force that a driver may have little to no time to respond.

Unfortunately, in single-vehicle tire-blowout rollovers, attention often focuses on the driver. People tend to assume someone was speeding, not paying attention, or lost control. That may be a starting point for an investigation, but when a tire fails, the questions cannot stop there—we must also examine the tire.

Over the years, we have seen many cases of tire failure due to defects. A defective tire will appear normal on the outside and then fail without warning. In those situations, the danger existed long before the tire was ever put into service, raising the question of how it made it past the manufacturer and to the public.

When people die or are seriously injured in a tire blowout crash, all details of what happened need to be investigated by trained professionals. If it is determined that the tire was defective, the manufacturer has many questions to answer.

Too many people were injured here. Someone lost their life. All those impacted (including the surviving family) deserve answers.

I hope everyone who was injured makes a full and fast recovery and that everyone receives the answers they deserve.
