Nissan Recalls Allegedly Defective Leaf EVs Due to Child Seat Belt Safety Risk


FRANKLIN, Tenn. — Nissan has announced a recall of nearly 4,000 model-year 2026 Leaf electric vehicles after a safety issue involving rear-seat seat belts was identified during independent testing.

According to the automaker, the recall involves rear seat belt assemblies that may not properly remain locked when securing an infant car seat using the vehicle’s seat belt. If the belt loosens during installation, the child restraint may not be securely fastened, increasing the risk of injury in a crash.

The issue was first identified during safety testing conducted by Consumer Reports. After being notified of the findings, Nissan performed its own evaluation and determined that some rear seat belt assemblies failed to meet federal motor vehicle safety standards for child restraint installation.

Nissan traced the issue to a manufacturing defect involving a supplier.
