Jimmy Broyles Killed in a Head-on Accident with a Mack Truck on Interstate-40 Near Amarillo, Texas


AMARILLO, Texas — One man was killed Thursday afternoon in a three-vehicle crash involving a truck-tractor on Interstate 40 near Amarillo.

Authorities said a 2022 Mack truck-tractor was westbound on I-40 near Arnot Road when, for reasons still unknown, the truck entered the center median and traveled through a cable barrier before crossing into the eastbound lanes.

The Mack truck then collided with a 1999 Ford F-250 driven by Jimmy Broyles of Logan, New Mexico. The Mack truck continued across the frontage road before coming to a stop in an open field. The Ford overturned and came to rest in the center median.

Broyles was pronounced dead at the scene.

What a sad, sad incident that could happen to any of us. What happened to cause this terrible crash? While many head-on collisions are caused by driver error, including distraction, excessive speed, or fatigue, there are instances in which mechanical problems, such as brake or steering malfunctions or sudden tire failure, cause a driver to lose control. If driver error caused the truck to cross the median and enter oncoming traffic, investigators need to determine exactly what the driver was doing in the moments before the crash. They should also examine the driver’s training and safety history and whether the trucking company had any reason to know there was a problem. If a mechanical failure contributed to the crash, investigators need to determine why it happened and whether the truck had been properly inspected and maintained.

Mr. Broyles lost his life through no fault of his own. His surviving family deserves answers about why this truck crossed the median and entered his path, and the opportunity to hold everyone responsible for his death accountable.
