Three Killed in Accident with Semi-Truck that Attempts U-Turn on Florida’s Turnpike in Fort Pierce

FORT PIERCE, Florida — Three people were killed Tuesday afternoon after a semi-truck attempted a U-turn on Florida’s Turnpike in Fort Pierce.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the semi-truck was traveling north in the right lane of the Turnpike, and a Chrysler Town & Country minivan was traveling north in the left lane when the semi-truck attempted to make a U-turn from the right lane using a turnaround area designated for official use only. As the truck crossed the left lane, the minivan was unable to avoid it and became lodged underneath the semi-truck.

A 37-year-old woman from Pompano Beach and a 54-year-old man from Miami, both passengers in the minivan, died at the scene.

The minivan driver, a 30-year-old man from Florida City, was airlifted to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Authorities reported finding tire marks at the scene consistent with the semi-truck’s attempted maneuver.
