Report Links Fifteen Fatal Crashes to Tesla Door Failures Following Collisions

UNITED STATES — At least 15 people have died in crashes involving Tesla vehicles where the electronically operated doors reportedly could not be opened after impact.

The analysis, conducted by Bloomberg, examined fatal crash data dating back to 2012 to determine how often inoperable electric door systems may have contributed to preventing occupants from exiting vehicles after collisions. The review included thousands of pages of police, fire, and autopsy records. Investigators also reviewed photographs, emergency call recordings, and law enforcement body-camera footage when available.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration provided information on fatal crashes involving vehicle fires between 2012 and 2023. Bloomberg separately identified additional fatal incidents in 2024 and 2025 through independent research.

Tesla vehicles use electrically powered door mechanisms rather than traditional mechanical handles. In emergencies, first responders typically rely on rapid access to vehicle occupants. Concerns about post-collision door operation have prompted renewed scrutiny of electronic door systems and their performance following severe impacts.
