Simon Girod and Henry, Menno, and Paul Eicher Killed in a Head-on Accident Involving a Semi-truck and a Van on State Road 67 near County Road 550 East in Bryant, Indiana

BRYANT, Ind. — Four people were killed Tuesday afternoon in a head-on collision involving two semi-tractor-trailers and a passenger van in northeastern Jay County. The crash occurred on State Road 67 near County Road 550 East.

Authorities believe an eastbound semi-tractor-trailer did not stop in time for a slowing commercial vehicle ahead. Authorities say the truck then crossed into the westbound lane, where it collided head-on with a full-size van.

The victims have been identified as Henry Eicher, 50; Menno Eicher, 25; Paul Eicher, 19; and Simon Girod, 23, all of Bryant.

Additional individuals involved in the crash were transported for treatment with injuries described as serious to life-threatening.

The surviving families and the injured deserve answers after a head-on truck crash

What a devastating loss. Four lives taken in a matter of seconds—a family lost in an instant. It’s hard to make sense of something like this. What makes it even more painful is knowing that crashes involving commercial trucks are often preventable.

Commercial vehicles require a significant stopping distance, and drivers are trained to anticipate slowing traffic ahead. When a truck fails to stop in time and crosses into oncoming lanes, the consequences can be catastrophic, as seen here. So what went wrong here? Why was the truck unable to stop?

It’s important to ask these questions because breakdowns often occur well before the moment of impact. In a recent case we handled, a commercial truck failed to slow for stopped traffic and struck a family’s vehicle, killing two parents and leaving their children without them.

Our investigation revealed multiple failures: the driver failed to manage speed properly, safety training was inadequate, and critical precautions were overlooked. What initially appeared to be a single moment of error was, in fact, the result of preventable safety failures.

In this case, the Eicher and Girod families deserve the same careful and thorough examination of what happened. They deserve to know what occurred in the moments leading up to this collision — and whether it could have been prevented.

Answering those questions requires more than a summary at the scene. When a semi crosses into oncoming traffic, that final movement is only part of the story. Understanding what led to that moment may involve reviewing driver logs, speed and braking data, maintenance records, and company safety practices. The Eicher and Girod families should not have to sort through those details on their own.

We hope they receive the full truth about what happened.
