Ohio Man Killed, Woman Injured in an Accident with a Semi-truck that Failed to Stop at the Intersection of M-60 and Spring Arbor Road in Jackson County, Michigan

JACKSON COUNTY, Mich. — A 72-year-old Ohio man was killed, and a 71-year-old woman was hurt on Monday afternoon following a collision with a commercial semi-truck. The incident happened at the intersection of M-60 and Spring Arbor Road in Jackson County.

According to reports, the incident involved a westbound SUV that was stopped or slowing near a traffic signal when it was struck from behind by a semi-truck.

The driver of the SUV was taken to a nearby hospital with critical injuries and later died. A 71-year-old woman who was riding in the vehicle was hospitalized and reported to be in stable condition.

The semi-truck driver was taken into custody and charged with a moving violation causing death. Reports indicate that speed may have played a role in the crash.

The surviving family and the injured deserve answers after a fatal truck crash

A normal afternoon drive should never turn fatal. Yet it did here. As vehicles slowed while approaching the intersection, the truck should have slowed as well. Commercial drivers are expected to control their speed and leave enough distance to stop safely. Why didn’t that happen here?

It is good that the driver was arrested, but this is only the start—we still need more answers. From our experience handling similar cases, we know the real problem often starts long before the collision itself. These crashes rarely happen out of nowhere. They are frequently the result of earlier failures — failures to monitor speed, enforce safety rules, or correct unsafe driving behavior.

In one case we handled in Texas, a distracted truck driver admitted he was looking at his phone and failed to maintain control of his speed before crashing into the rear of a passenger vehicle. The impact killed one person and seriously injured others. When we looked beyond the police report, we found that the trucking company had failed to train and supervise its drivers properly, allowing unsafe driving practices to persist. The driver and the company attempted to shift blame, but we fought to hold them accountable so the grieving family could finally get answers.

Those impacted in this crash also deserve answers: one life was lost and another person was hurt with injuries that may last long after the collision. The family left behind and the injured deserve answers and accountability.

May they find the answers they need.
