Luecios Lucero Killed in Single-Vehicle Tire Blowout Rollover Accident on State Highway 115 in Winkler County, Texas

WINKLER COUNTY, Texas – A 21-year-old man from New Mexico died Friday evening following a single-vehicle rollover crash in Winkler County, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. The incident happened on State Highway 115.

Troopers said a 2002 GMC Yukon was traveling eastbound when the front passenger-side tire blew out, causing the driver to lose control and the vehicle to overturn.

Luecios Xavior Lucero, 21, of Melrose, New Mexico, was transported to Winkler County Memorial Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Vehicle Tire Must Be Examined for Potential Defects After Fatal Crash

What a devastating accident. Even the most experienced driver can lose control in an instant when a tire blows out. There is often no warning and no time to react. That sudden loss of control can turn an ordinary drive into a fatal event.

What makes incidents like this especially tragic is how quickly blame can settle on the driver alone. In single-vehicle crashes, attention often focuses on the driver’s actions, the roadway, or routine vehicle maintenance. That may be where investigations begin—but when a life is lost, it cannot be where they end. The answers should not stop at the first police report.

Here, early reports suggest the vehicle may have suffered a tire blowout before it lost control. That detail matters. A tire failure is not always about road conditions or neglect. Tires do not simply fail without reason. Over the years, we have seen many cases where tires failed because they were defective — tires that should never have left the manufacturer in the first place. When that happens, the danger is built in long before the crash ever occurs.

In one recent case here in Texas,  a Ford F-350 experienced a sudden tire failure while traveling on the highway. In a matter of seconds, the driver lost control. There was no time to react, no opportunity to avoid what followed. The vehicle rolled, and one person died while the other passengers were left seriously injured.

As the case unfolded, it became clear that this was not simply a matter of chance. The tire had underlying defects, and the way it was sold and installed increased the risk of a rollover. What first appeared to be an unavoidable crash was, in fact, something that never should have happened.

We worked to hold both the manufacturer and the tire shop accountable for their roles in what happened, seeking answers and justice for the people who were harmed and the families left grieving. No one should be put at risk by equipment that fails when it is supposed to keep people safe.

Mr. Lucero’s family also deserves answers. They deserve to understand what went wrong and why. They should not be left to carry those questions alone. When there is reason to believe something may have failed, those concerns deserve careful attention and honest answers, so the truth is not overlooked.

We hope Mr. Lucero’s family finds the answers they deserve.
