Charles Ortega, Travis and Ryan Morehead, Killed in a Head-on Accident with a Semi-truck on Highway 6 in Grimes County, Texas

GRIMES COUNTY, Texas — Three individuals lost their lives in a two-vehicle crash along State Highway 6 near the Grimes and Waller County line on Wednesday afternoon.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the collision occurred when a northbound 2020 Freightliner tractor-trailer crossed the center median and entered the southbound lanes, where it collided with a 2026 Hyundai Santa Cruz.

The driver of the Hyundai, Charles Ortega, 45, of Hempstead, was killed in the crash. Also in the vehicle were Travis Morehead, 46, seated in the front passenger seat, and Ryan Morehead, 21, riding in the rear seat.

All three were pronounced deceased at the scene or shortly after being transported to the hospital.

The surviving families deserve answers after fatal truck crash

What a tragedy. Three men lost their lives on what should have been a normal drive — heading home, going to work, or out running errands. No one driving in their lane expects a semi-truck to enter their path suddenly. Collisions like this unfold in seconds, often leaving little time to react.

But crashes like this rarely begin in that final moment.

Too often, what first looks like a single driver’s mistake turns out to involve larger safety failures. In many head-on truck crash cases we have handled, warning signs were present long before the collision.

In one case we handled, a man from Nebraska was driving home after a long work trip when a semi-truck attempted to pass on a two-lane highway, crossed the double yellow line, and struck his vehicle head-on, taking his life and leaving his parents with unimaginable grief.

In a Texas case, an 18-wheeler lost control on a wet roadway and entered opposing traffic, killing an innocent woman and leaving her husband to raise their two young children alone.

In both cases, what we uncovered was deeply troubling: the crashes were preventable, the drivers had documented histories of unsafe driving, yet the trucking companies failed to investigate, train, or properly monitor them. In the Texas case, the trailer was also overloaded, further increasing the risk of a catastrophic collision.

We fought to hold those responsible accountable.

In this incident, the Morehead and Ortega families deserve the same careful examination and answers. They deserve to know what happened in the moments leading up to this crash — and whether it could have been prevented.

Answering those questions requires more than a brief report at the scene. Even when a tractor-trailer crosses the median, that final movement is only part of the story. Determining what led to that moment may involve reviewing driver logs, maintenance records, and company safety practices. Families should not have to piece those details together on their own.

We hope they find the answers they deserve.
